Importance
As drones are stable and safe to fly they are being very useful. As drones evolve they become more reliable, inexpensive and useful tools for everybody. In today's society drones are important as they are used for military purposes, agriculture, rescue missions, and in geography. However, in the future, drones are going to have a more importance role in the society because they are going to be used for almost everything such as transportation, delivery, storm tracking, mapping, agriculture, and much more (Agerholm).
Drones are important in society specially in the military because of several reasons. Drones are used in the military for combat missions, research, and for supervision. A lot of money is being spent on drones in the military. According to the research it is estimated that the military will spend around 70 billion dollars for drones in 2020 ("Drone Technology Uses"). "The UK has used its military drones and pilots only in areas acknowledged as conflict zones such as Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan, while RAF drones do not take part in the CIA programme" (Wyatt). This meaning that drones are used only in important missions.
Drones are very important in agriculture as using a drone is an easy and quick way for farmers to check if there are any problems in the crops (Meola). Drones can see the crops from the sky and detect some problems that humans cannot. Also drones can be used for irrigation systems. The drones for irrigation have a thermal camera that helps detecting problems like water pooling (Hale). According to Meola “Global Market Insights forecasts that the agricultural drone market size will exceed $1 billion and 200,000 units shipped by 2024”. So in the future it is expected that drones are going to be used frequently for agriculture.
Drones are used by rescue teams such as police officers, firefighters, emergency services, and much more. Drones are important in the rescue missions as they provide real time information from the sky. Also drones reduce the cost and risk of the search. Drones facilitate the rescue teams by locating a person by using a thermal camera (“Drone Search Rescue”). Recently a paddle boarder was rescued by a drone. The drone has helped locate his general location in the sea(Paddleboarder Found Rescued”).
Drones are very important in geography. They are used for collecting geospatial data, urban planning, weather forecasting, wildlife, and much more. The geospatial data is collected using a drone by capturing images of fieldwork location. Then these images are analysed to identify potential sample locations and determine their accessibility (Bennett). Drones are also used for an urban planner’s toolkit as they help collect data, analyse and visualize. “Drones will take on new heights becoming more accurate and accessible than ever before, subsequently re-shaping the way in which modern cities are built” (Some). Drones play an important role in the wildlife monitory. The drones help covering large areas as it is an efficient and quick way of wildlife monitoring. Drones have a GPS location and a camera that helps the inspection of the wildlife. These drones have a low noise so that it does not scare the animals (“Wildlife Game Monitoring”). The drones can be also used for weather forecast. These drones have an individual sensor called dropsonde. The sensor is dropped on the sky with the help of the drone. These sensors collect data as they fall with a small parachute (Boover). All of these methods are simple and reduce the spend of money by using a drone.
